How To Get Your Tiktoks To Go Viral
With the highest social media engagement rate per post and 800 million monthly active users, TikTok is an exciting opportunity for creators and brands.
Here's how to go viral on TikTok.
TikTok recently explained how their algorithm works. The main three things that determine which videos will end up on your 'For You' page include user interactions (who and what type of content you're engaging with), video information (things like hashtags and songs that you interact with) and account settings (your first language and where your location is set to).
Getting on the 'For You' page
One way to have your videos seen by more people, is by having them featured on the 'For You' page. This is a tactic so effective, it's the goal for almost every TikTok creator.
The 'For You' page is a feed of popular videos, curated for every user, based on the content they've previously engaged with (liked, commented, saved, shared). A bit like the 'Explore' page on Instagram. When videos go viral, users refer to it as 'hitting the For You page'.
What makes the 'For you' page even more exciting than Instagram's 'Explore' page is its placement. The 'For you' page is TikTok user's default home page and the 'Following' page (a feed full of videos created by the people you follow), is the secondary feed. On Instagram, 'Explore' is the secondary feed. Because most users stick to scrolling through their primary 'For You' page on TikTok, it's considered easier to go viral there than on Instagram. And unlike other social media platforms, TikTok's algorithm doesn't take into consideration how well your past content performed.
Our best tip for making it onto the For You page is to create quality, engaging content. Videos that are interesting, funny, cute or edited in a unique way, are more likely to go viral, as users will want to like, comment, share and re-watch it. All important engagements that will help your content gain traction. Incorporate trends and challenges through the use of songs, sounds and hashtags and the chances of your TikTok hitting the 'For You' page will increase.
Use hashtags effectively
Hashtags are a major element of TikTok. Every challenge or trend has its own and almost every video you watch will use them. Users don't always search for hashtags. However, their 'For You' page is generally organised to show videos that use hashtags which they have engaged with in the past. For example, if someone likes, comments on or shares many videos that are hash-tagged with #SelfCareRoutine, their For You page is going to be full of self care videos, which use that same hashtag.
Using challenges or trending hashtags will help make your videos more discoverable. Not only will your TikTok content reach your followers, but potentially a whole outside community who engage with videos similar to yours. For example, participate in the latest #VogueChallenge, and users who have been interacting with these TikToks, might just end up coming across your video. Purely because their For You page is curated with similar clips.
Videos that use trending hashtags, are also complied together on users 'Discover' page. For example, every video that has used the #WipeItDown challenge hashtag, will all be curated on a feed together.
Keep in mind that TikTok captions overlap your video. The longer your caption is, the more your TikTok will be obstructed from view. We recommend using hashtags that are extremely targeted and relevant to the type of content you are posting.
Tip: Switch to a Pro Account to track your success
Before you get creating, set your profile up as a Pro Account to view your analytics. This way you can track just how well your content is performing. Here's how:
#1 Click on the three dots in the top left hand corner of your profile screen.
#2 Under Account, tap on 'Manage my account'.
#3 Select 'Switch to Pro Account' and hit continue.
#4 chose which category your profile falls under i.e. beauty/fashion, food/cooking, etc.
#5 Hit Done and that's it! You now have the ability to view your profile and content analytics.
We also recommend using your insights knowledge to post content your audience will engage with. Your analytics will tell you things like where your followers are from, when they're most active throughout the week and which sounds your followers are listening to. All important stats you'll want to know before uploading your next TikTok, for optimal results.
